With each class, we look for those individuals who are curious about the natural world, enjoy the outdoors, and want to develop the necessary skills for volunteering and contributing to natural resource management, preservation and conservation in Virginia. Applications for the 2027 training course will open on October 1 and close on December 18, 2026. Please check this page at that time for a link to the application.
To apply, you will need to submit an online application, participate in a brief phone interview, pay the course fee, and have your references checked by the Headwaters Master Naturalist training committee.
Cost
We are committed to reducing financial barriers to participation in the VMN program. As of 2026, the VMN State Office is implementing statewide Variable Pricing options for those with a demonstrated financial need. The standard fee for the training course is $130. The option to select a different registration fee based on your need is available as part of the volunteer application process.
You will also be expected to purchase the Flora of Virginia app ($19.99) if you do not already have it.
